African Dance Workshop

“Alanouwaly Salifou Sylla Foundation presents: African Dance Workshop for all ages with Mariama Ndiaye, who will be delivering a fun and relaxed African dance class for beginners and improvers  – a chance for those who are new to West African dance to give it a try and learn some basic steps and movements. She will be supported by live drummers Souleymane Compo and Wuntanara.
Mariama Ndiaye has studied, performed and taught West African dance for over 15 years in Hungary, Slovakia, Australia, Senegal and the UK. Mariama loves to share the joy and fun she experiences through dancing. “If you can walk you can dance, if you can talk you can sing” Zimbabwean proverb.
The registered charity Alanouwaly Salifou Sylla Foundation was founded in honour of Salifou Sylla, a Lewisham resident, who died young in a car crash in 2008. Salifou was an exceptional Guinean musician and dancer with huge generosity who had a vision of creating an understanding across cultures through his artistic skills and ability to inspire, connect and unify. We promote African arts/culture and exchange between cultures by organising African music & dance workshops and an annual music and family Festival. In Guinea we support our partners with self-help projects: computer learning & internet, sewing skills & enterprise, cultural exchange and creating clean water sources with their Clean Water project. Our partners in Guinea host visitors to experience and learn West-African music, dance and culture.”
